Introducing the ConcertIDC AIathon

Read Time 6 mins | Written by: Debra Hays

In 2007, Facebook hosted the first Hackathon.  This event was vital in creating the "Like" button.  Since that first Hackathon, there have been 100s of 1000s such events, and although these historically have been technology events, now companies are applying this model to all kinds of businesses.  With the explosion of AI, we, as a software development company, must embrace how we can leverage AI for our company.  So, in the spirit of Hackathons, ConcertIDC is hosting our first-ever AIathon.

Our AIathon will be an internal event, which is very important for our company.

An employee asked me why we are doing this when we have plenty of work and client projects. This simple question challenged me to clarify why we are hosting this event.  The answer is simple at the most basic level: Innovation and Collaboration.

Why is an AIathon important: Catalysts for Innovation and Collaboration

In a time marked by rapid technological advancements and a staggering pace of change, this AIathon is meant to be a powerful force driving innovation, collaboration, and skill development. This event will follow the guidelines that have long been established:  individuals or teams come together to solve problems, create new products, or explore novel ideas within a limited time frame. Historically, when organizations have hosted the Hackathons on which our AIathon is inspired, they are regarded as essential platforms for fostering creativity, teamwork, and real-world problem-solving skills. We at ConcertIDC want to emulate that within our workforce and provide our employees the opportunity to work with exciting technology in a way that pushes them.

  1. Innovation

This event is meant to be a breeding ground for innovation. We want to challenge everyone to think outside the box, challenge conventional wisdom, and come up with creative solutions to complex problems—all using AI. Like a Hackathon, the urgency of this marathon—lasting just 24 hours—will encourage our team to push their limits and explore new territories.

Since that first Facebook Hackathon, the Like button has become a fundamental part of the social media experience. Such innovations demonstrate how this event can lead to the development of new ideas that transform industries and improve user experiences.

  1. Fostering Collaboration and Networking

Due to the nature of a client-based services business, many times, there isn't the opportunity for our employees to work with colleagues assigned to other clients.  The AIathon will bring together individuals from diverse projects with diverse skill sets and experience. This diversity is a crucial driver of innovation, as it encourages the exchange of ideas and perspectives that might not otherwise happen. Working alongside individuals with different expertise—whether they are software developers, designers, marketers, or entrepreneurs—facilitates cross-disciplinary learning and fosters a culture of collaboration.

Networking is another significant benefit of this event. Our Employees will have the opportunity to connect with like-minded colleagues, project leaders, and potential collaborators. These connections will lead to a company culture that encourages future collaborations and even startup ventures. These relationships are as valuable to a company as learned skills.

  1. Accelerating Learning and Skill Development

Because of the pace of change in the world, we must find a way to create a learning environment where participants can acquire and hone new skills quickly. This event's hands-on nature means that individuals will learn by doing, which is far more effective than traditional web-based study. Employees will be exposed to new tools, technologies, and methodologies they might not encounter in their work.

  1. Encouraging Entrepreneurial Spirit

We want this even to act as a launchpad for entrepreneurial ventures within the company. What can we create to create a new tool or company?  Many startups have been born out of these projects. We want to encourage testing ideas in a low-risk setting, and successful prototypes might become company-wide initiatives.

  1. Addressing Real-World Problems

We are focused on solving real-world issues, particularly those that impact the Software Development Lifecycle. Our work is organized around software development or AI tools that can impact a client. We aim to develop solutions that address pressing challenges for our company or our clients.

  1. Building a Community and Culture of Innovation

We are always trying to build a vibrant community of innovators and problem solvers in our company. The shared experience of intense collaboration and creative problem-solving fosters a sense of camaraderie and belonging. We want people to carry forward the lessons learned and the connections made into their everyday work.

Furthermore, the culture of experimentation and iterative development promoted by this event can influence broader organizational practices. By embracing this style of thinking, we encourage everyone to lean into our agile methodologies, embrace failure as a learning opportunity, and continually seek ways to innovate.

  1. Enhancing Employer Brand and Recruitment

We hope to take this event externally in the coming 6 to 12 months.  This expansion is a strategic move to enhance our employer brand and attract top talent. We intend to provide a platform for engaging with potential recruits in a dynamic and informal setting to showcase our commitment to innovation and employee development.

Large tech organizations like Google and Microsoft frequently use such events as part of their recruitment strategy, which allows them to identify and engage with skilled individuals who excel in problem-solving and creative thinking. For job seekers, participating in these events can be a way to demonstrate their skills and stand out in a competitive job market.

In Conclusion

It is clear that AI is more than just a trend. It is here and impacting all of our work and personal lives.  The concept of Hackathons is a crucial component of the modern innovation ecosystem. Combining that component with AI only makes sense.  We strive to drive technological advancements, foster collaboration and networking, accelerate skill development, and promote entrepreneurship and values. We intend to create a fertile ground for creativity and change by bringing our company together in this way.
